An Open Letter To: The Honorable Governor Dave Freudenthal

From: Wyoming’s Wildlife Conservation Organizations

Subject: Wyoming Governor’s Big Game Licenses

Dear Governor Freudenthal:

On behalf of Wyoming’s wildlife, Thank You! for returning the proceeds from the sales of your complimentary big game licenses directly to Wyoming’s wildlife. Many Wyoming wildlife conservation organizations have hoped for this event for many years, and we are grateful to you for having taken this action.

One of the treasures we enjoy most in Wyoming is our wildlife; it’s a precious resource. It’s also a resource that is losing ground. Residential and industrial development, disease, landscapes plagued by fire suppression and drought, and unprecedented decreases in shrub health and forage production have taken their toll on game and nongame species alike. Your action to return the big game license funds to our wildlife will help us address many of these pressing issues. In return, we commit that we will invest them back into one of the natural resources that makes Wyoming such a special place – her wildlife.

Perhaps Chris Madson, editor of Wyoming Wildlife magazine, explained our wildlife resources best:

“For more than 200 years, wildlife has been a defining part of the Wyoming experience. The herds thread their way through our collective imagination … A drive across the state is punctuated by golden eagles, prairie falcons, sandhill cranes, and trumpeter swans. Where else but Wyoming do antelope browse on the grounds of the state capitol building? Where else do you brake for moose and bison? Our lives are set against a tapestry of wildlife …”

– A Quiet Crisis

For those of us who love Wyoming, what better legacy than this tapestry
of wildlife can we leave for future generations?

Thank you for your support in this endeavor, Governor Freudenthal!
